NOFV Oberliga 1990-91

The last season of GDR football saw Hansa Rostock do the double, but more importantly, qualify for the Bundesliga next season. The whole season was one of finishing at least in the top 6, as that would mean integration into the West German professional league. Everybody else would get dumped in the new Amateur Oberliga Nordost. Most teams went on wild spending sprees to increase their chances of making the professional grade. Dynamo Dresden had the first "million transfer" as they bought Heiko Scholz from Lok Leipzig for 1 million marks. (Scholz had been dropped from Dynamo's youth squad a few years earlier because he wasn't good enough). Dynamo, which had more money since selling players like Matthias Sammer and Ulf Kirsten to the west, also bought Uwe Rösler from Magdeburg for 1.2 million. At least for the defending champion the spending spree initially paid off, as they qualified for the Bundesliga.

The club Chemie Böhlen, which was newly promoted, actually disappeared 12 days before the start of the season. They merged with Chemie Leipzig to form Sachsen Leipzig.

Despite horrible attendance, violence also reared it's ugly head. As Sachsen Leipzig lost 1-4 to FC Berlin, mobs began fighting outside the stadium. The police opened fire, shooting 9, one fatally. In general, the "hooligan" element caused severe problems throughout the season.
