VfB Auerbach

Auerbach became the 2nd soccer club to be founded in the Vogtland when 15 citizens got together at the "Hotel Kaiserhof" in May 1906 to start the club. They chose the name Auerbacher Fußball Club. AFC played their first match a month later, defeating the 2nd team of Plauen BC. In 1919 AFC decided to allow worthless sports like tennis and athletics into the club, and so changed the name to VfB Auerbach.

The 1920s were years of growth, as the soccer stadium was built at Am Ziegeleiweg, and membership grew above 500. Economic difficulties hit fairly hard with the Depression and things began going downhill. Durting the 1930s, VfB continued with uneven results, and was never able to make the jump to the Gauliga.

After WW-II, the club was banned, but continued unofficially. in 1949 an official GDR club was started, Bertriebssportgemeinschaft Kommunale Wirtschaftsunternehmen Auerbach. By 1951, the name got too unwieldly even for the Commie bureaucrats, so they simply became BSG Einheit. The club generally kicked around in the Bezirksliga level of GDR leagues.

After reunification, the name VfB was restored, and the club began a climb up to some of the highest levels of play in club history.
