VfB Bottrop

A Ruhr club that has remained mostly in the regional shadows. There are over 500 members, of which 400 are associated with soccer.

The club was founded in 1900 as Verein für Turn- und Volksspiele Bottrop, and the soon to be dominant soccer section was started two years later. In 1906 they were joined by BV 04 Bottrop and in 1919 they merged with SpV Bottrop to form VfB 1900. The success of the team however was strictly at the lower levels. In the 1950s, things looked up a bit, as they were usually in the upper half of the old 2.Liga-West.

VfB was seeded into the new Regionalliga in 1963, and was promptly relegated, and bounnced back up. In 1965, VfB was a bit unlucky. They finished 17th in the Regionalliga, and were relegated. But then they had a playoff with Bonner SC, which they promptly won 5-0. Unfortunately the Western regional soccer federation later on decided that Bottrop had to be relegated anyway.

Since the 1980s, Bottrop has generally been at the lower amateur levels. The 90s started off poorly as well, as the club faced bankruptcy. However, a court appointed administrator was able to clear out the debts, and for the first time since the Regionalliga days of the late 1960s the club was financially sound.
