FC Erfurt-Nord

A minor club that has only recently been on the radar as Erfurt's 2nd club.

This club started in 2004, when the soccer section of SSV Erfurt-Nord went independent. SSV was started in 1945 as SG Erfurt-Nord and was intended as the heir to the pre-war SpVgg Erfurt, which had been decent club in the 1930s, usually in the Gauliga Mitte. After a brief affiliation with the steel works (BSG Stahl) in 1951, in 1952 it became known as BSG Motor Erfurt-Nord. Success was quite limited, as the local rival (and non-socialist named) Rot-Weiß was quite popular. In 1972 the affiliation again changed, and the club was known as BSG Umformtechnik. Upon reunification, the BSG became a Spiel- und Sportgemeinschaft, and in 1992 the "UT" was also dropped.

Success on the field started in the late 1990s, as they moved up into the Oberliga. Although they remain far behind RWE, they've at least made their presence felt.
