SV Fortuna Magdeburg

Fortuna was founded in 1911, and was a successful regional club in the interwar period. In the GDR, the club was known as BSG Turbine Magdeburg, and again success was modest. In the early to mid 60's, Turbine played in the 2nd division of the GDR league. With die Wende in 1990, the club went back to it's roots as Fortuna, and this development has been good at least for the soccer section. In the past 7 years, they have been promoted some 5 times.

The last couple years of the century saw Fortuna eek out mid level standings in the Oberliga. However, with the failure of local rival FCM, in the 2000-01, the long awaited city derby was again a reality. Or so they thought. Apparently Fortuna must have had financial difficulties, and were therefore relegated. Then all the players abandoned the club, so the reserve team became the starters - but they had to play in the Landesklasse.
