RSV Göttingen 05 RSV Göttingen 05The famous university town apparently has soccer fans, but I haven't been able to gather much info. Founded 1905 in as Göttinger FC. (A club with the same name had actually been founded in 1898, but was disbanded in 1903). It's current name was fixed in 1948, when the club was refounded after WWII.
For the most part, SCG has wallowed in obscurity, known in northern Germany, but that's about it. The real peak years were probably the 1970s, when they got promoted to the 2.Liga a couple of times, only to be relegated.
Despite a solid effort in 2000, the club really had no chance in qualifying for the new combined Regionalliga. However, the first season in the new 4th division proved to be a bitter disappointment: Goettingen won the league, and then went on to win the promotion playoffs. But the net result? A denial of a license for financial reasons by the DFB.
The club continued to struggle, but in September 2003 the towel was thrown in. This famous club went bankrupt and all games in the Verbandsliga were cancelled. A new club rose to take it's place, 1.FC Göttingen 05. It remains to be seen what kind of soccer they will be playing. The youth teams started play immediately as 1.FC 05. There were plans in 2004 for a merger with RSV Geimar to get the men's squad back on the field. Since RSV had just got relegated and fallen apart, players from the new 1.FC came over, and the team would compete in the Bezirksklasse. The official merger was completed in 2005, with the new club called RSV Göttingen 05
