VfB Oldenburg

Founded in 1897, things were pretty quiet in this neck of the woods until getting into the Regionallifga in the early 1970s. In the 1990s, Oldenburg has established itself as a classic elevator between the 2nd and 3rd divisions. The highpoint was probably 1992, when they finished runner up in the 2.Liga Nord.

Much more was expected from VfB in the 98-99 season, but the team got off to a horrendous start. That, coupled with several cancelled games, had them in the relegation zone. However, once they started making up the lost games and playing decent, they easily achieved mid-table status. Then the finances, or rather lack thereof, caught up, and they barely avoided bankruptcy. The team was totally out of their league, and they finished dead last. The club was scheduled to be dissolved, and a new club "Fc Germannia" was scheduled to take it's place. But luckily at the last minute, the court appointed administrator was able to put things in order and save the club. Since then, it's been a constant struggle with finances, while remaining in regional play in the 4th division.
