VFC Plauen

The Vogtländischer Fußball Club Plauen was founded in 1990, reclaiming it's traditional name from the BSG Motor WEMA club. However, the real roots go back long before then. In 1907, VFC was founded, and played in various leagues, with interruptions during the wars. After WWII, soccer was restarted in Plauen, but without any teams, although eventually in SG Plauen-Süd became the flagbearer. They played under a variety of names until about 1963, when they settled on BSG Motor WEMA.

The club was not especially successful, and in the early 90s was struggling. The 91-92 campaign was quite forgettable, as the team only manged 12 goals, while getting 108 banged in, with only 4 measly points in 34 games (on the two pt scale). However, since then, there has been an upwards trend.

The 1998-99 season saw Plauen do very well. The result, an unexpected 5th place, was the best ever Regionalliga finish. Unfortunately, they were unable to repeat it next year, when it really counted, and there would be no qualification for the new combined 3rd division. Like many of the eastern teams, the main struggle is one of declining attendances and the precarious state of financing. It would take another 4 seasons to make it back to the new Regionalliga.
