FC Recklinghausen 96

For a town of medium size, Recklinghausen has produced quite a few clubs that have participated in the regional leagues. (Generally without any success. Among others, Viktoria and Union had short appearances in the Gauliga Westfalen in the late 1930s, which was probably the high point until merger mania swept the town, starting in the 1970s.

In 1972, Viktoria Recklinghausen and SuS 1913 Recklinghausen decided to merge and formed SC Recklinghausen. Not to be left out in the cold, 1.SV Union Recklinghausen, SC Preußen Hochlarmark and SU Wacker 1920 Recklinghausen merged to form SV Eintracht Recklinghausen, which was generally the strongest of the local teams. In 1981, the two major clubs, Eintracht and SC merged to form 1.FC Recklinghausen. Despite combining resources, the club quickly sunk into mediocrity.

In 1996, 1.FC, keeping the tradition of many desperate mergers, went bankrupt, and a new club was founded on the ashes: FC Recklinghausen 96.
