FV Speyer

A small club on the Rhein river whose best years were probably the early 1970s.

The roots go back to 1847, with the founding of TV 1847 Speyer. The soccer section became independent in 1919 as FV Speyer. The location of this momentous occasion was the Gaststätte "Nürnberg". In 1938 they were forced back into a merger with the gymnasts, and competed under the name VfL 1847. Although they did manage to make it into the Gauliga Westmark in 1943, there wasn't much to crow about. One of the positive outcomes of WW-II is that the gymnasts were kicked out when the club restarted in 1946 as FV again.

The club did play in the old Oberliga Südwest in the 1950s, once drawing a record 14,000 in 1958 against 1.FC Kaiserslautern. After a stay in the Regionalliga Südwest, FVS eventually disappeared into the reletive obscurity of the upper regional amateur ranks. 1977 proved to be a historic year. Playing in the Amateurliga Südwest, Speyer had an amazing season...not. 0 wins, 1 draw, 35 losses. 20 goals scored, 183 against. Erstaunlich!

Financial difficulties forced the sale of the Roßsprung stadium in 1992. This did allow the club to move back into solvency, and eventually raise funds for a new facility.
