Viktoria Frankfurt/Oder

The club began play in 1971, as the army club Vorwärts Berlin was moved. This replaced the existing local club (secret police affiliated) SG Dynamo, which was then disbanded. Rumors had it that Secret Police chief Erich Mielke, who favored Dynamo Berlin, wanted his club to be the no.1 in Berlin and the GDR. He convinced the Defense Ministry to OK a move of Vorwärts Berlin.

The new club never really was able to continue the success of the Berlin predecessor, but didn't do that badly. Vorwärts had a decent run in the 1980s, as they went to the UEFA-Cup 4 times, twice getting knocked out by West German clubs (Werder Bremen and VfB Stuttgart).

After reunification, the club obviously dropped affiliation with the Volksarmee and became FC Victoria. Although success on the field was reasonable, as Victoria played in the regional level, the loss of funding meant increased financial problems. Coupled with eth economic decline of the city's fortunes, it is likely that Viktoria will only be represented at the regional level for the forseeable future.

Stadium Stadion der Freundschaft. Capacity: 12,000 (5,000 seats)
A typical GDR era stadium, built in 1953 with a capacity of 20,000. Floodlights were added in 1969 - but all the lightbulbs have been removed. Generally speaking, this larger stadium is only used in big matches (e.g. DFB Cup) or when needed for "security reasons". Generally speaking they just play on the field next door ("Nebenplatz vom Stadion"), which basically allows about 2,000 to stand around.
