FSV Zwickau

Founded in 1991, after die Wende, but it's roots are of a standard GDR club. In 1948, it started out as BSG Horch, but was changed in 1950 to BSG Motor. At this time they actually won the GDR championship, although these were less formally organized years. In 1969, it took the name Sachsenring, which apparently was an auto factory, makers of the infamous Trabant.

Results in the DDR-Oberliga were modest. A good season meant a mid-table finish, other years were a tight battle against relegation. They did manage to win the GDR-Cup in 1975. After legendary keeper Jürgen Croy hung up his boots in the 1980s, things got worse, and Zwickau started bouncing up and down.

After reunification, things actually started to get better. The successes were modest, but they did have a decent run one year in the 2.Liga - and lasted four years. Although FSV was going down, there was some hope that they could establish themselves as a regional force and soon pop back up.

The 1998-99 campaign was fairly decent, as they were near the top of the table for most of the season. What followed was an unbelievable collapse, as in the critical combined Regionalliga qualifying year they finished dead last. Financial difficulties, like almost all eastern clubs, continue to weigh heavily. Results on the field refelected the economic problems, and by 2005, Zwickau was relegated down to the 5th diivsion, the lowest level in club history.

Friends
Foes Erzgebirge Aue.
Heroes 9 GDR internationals. The best player was Jürgen Croy, the long time GDR goalkeeper (94 caps), one of the world's best, who probably would have been world famous if he had played in the west. Normally a player like Croy would have been forced to transfer to a stronger team, but he convinced the bureaucrats that as a keeper, he got better practice playing for a weaker club.
Foes
Beer Wernesgrüner-Pils and the famed Köstritzer Schwarzbier are popular. Light Bier from the local Mauritius Brewery was made especially for FSV, however generally other Mauritius brews are preferred. (Pilsener, Urtyp, Schwarzes Gold, Bock, etc.)
Grub and Pub Aside from the Light beer and sodas, there is the usual array of sausages available. There is also a mobile Bockwurst seller that provides "Bockwursts for Peace". The Gaststätte am Stadion supposedly has decent food.

Apparently in November 2004 the club board ordered the "fan-forum" closed due to criticism, and the staff of the website resigned in protest. Remains to be seen what happens. Among other sites worth checking out are The Fan Project site, www.fanprojekt-zwickau.de . Another useful fan-site is www.zwickau2000.de/fsv/index.html. Ralf Strobelt maintains a nice fan page, www.fsv-fan.de
